(In the Q & A 103 the Catechism deals with the 4th Commandment, Sabbath Commandment: 1.How to observe the Sabbath; 2.The spiritual meaning of the Sabbath observance.

First, it is YAHWEH’s command to β€œremember the Sabbath by keeping it holy.” β€œSabbath” means β€œrest.” The Sabbath was instituted by YAHWEH in the Garden of Eden after YAHWEH’s Six Day creation work. Thus it is a universal law for all human race, not just for Israel as a nation under Moses. Naturally, the Sabbath observance has to be maintained always by all people of God and must be carried to the next generations to come. How to observe the Sabbath day is explained in the first part of the Catechism.

Second, Sabbath observance has a higher and ultimate goal. It is pointing to our final rest in the new heavens and earth. Our final spiritual rest is not earned by our own effort. It was earned by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and His resurrection. Therefore, if we cannot trust YAHWEH for all things including our life, Sabbath observance means nothing spiritually to us. And we continue to live a life of evil works of sin.)

Supplement to the Fourth Commandment Study - 1

1. The Fourth Commandment consists of two parts: 1) The Commandment; 2) The reason for the Commandment.

2. This Commandment has a twofold character: 1) Moral and Perpetual – the reason and the end of the Commandment explains this character; 2) Ceremonial and Temporary – the 7th day has to be kept holy is so.

1) Moral and Perpetual.
a) In Exodus 20, YAHWEH explains why the Sabbath has to be kept. It was due to His completed Creation work. Does YAHWEH need Sabbath for Himself? No, not at all! YAHWEH did institute Sabbath for the sake of Adam and his wife. This couple was created to have a fellowship with God in terms of worship. But they were given a task by their Creator (Genesis 1:28). Furthermore, Adam was given a specific task to work and take care of the Garden prior to their task (Genesis 2:15). This couple was busy with their God-given task for 6 days.
Therefore, they need to break from their 6 days’ chores, and set aside a whole day for their total devotion to having a fellowship with God. Thus, the end of this Commandment was to let men worship YAHWEH without any cares and concerns resulted from their 6-day work. Even in their innocent stage, still they needed to worship YAHWEH for a whole day by resting from their daily and regular chores.

b) After the Fall, sinners’ worship of YAHWEH was extremely difficult due to their selfish and rebellious spirit. This perpetual duty of worshipping YAHWEH is unchanged with us and still all human beings’ moral obligation and privilege.

Supplement to the Fourth Commandment Study - 2

2) Ceremonial and Temporary.
a) YAHWEH instituted the Sabbath for the observance of Mosaic worship in Israel as a nation of God. This kind of Sabbath observance was a type of the sanctification of the Old Testament church, Israel by the Messiah who was to come. (Exodus 20:11 and 31:13). Therefore, as far as the Sabbath as the seventh day of the week for Israel, it was a ceremonial observance with other ceremonies and types fulfilled and abolished by the coming of the Messiah.

b) Christ teaches that ceremonial works must yield to moral ones. (Matthew 12:7; Mark 2:27) Therefore, ceremonies should be permitted for the sake of works of love that we and, or our neighbors need on the Sabbath Day. (Matthew 12:5; John 7:22-23). Those works of mercy/love would not hinder us from worshipping God, rather they carry out the intention of the Sabbath, and establish it.

3) How would the gentiles among the Jews behave on the Sabbath Day?
a) If other nationals lived among the Jews, how should they do on the Jewish Sabbath Day? They were not obliged to observe and conform to all the Jewish ceremonies, but should not offend the Jews on the Sabbath Day. Therefore, the Jewish officials must defend the Jewish religion from those gentiles lived among them. Furthermore, this Commandment was given not only to the Jews only, but also given to the all men in Adam, thus the foreign nationals must observe the Sabbath Day as a moral law for them by their Creator.

b) YAHWEH sanctifies His people on the Sabbath Day, but He does not do so for the gentiles among the Jews. Those nationals did not have to observe the Sabbath as a Jewish ceremony, yet they should not offend or stumble the Jews on the Sabbath Day.

Supplement to the Fourth Commandment Study - 3

4) As parents, they have a duty to instruct and train up their children to worship God by prohibiting them from working on the Sabbath Day, since they are to be members of God’s church. Also our needy neighbors must be taken of by us and our children in our love and works of mercy on the Sabbath Day.

5) Even the cattle and servants are to rest as their owners, because the Sabbath Day was not for cattle per se, rather it was for the owners and their servants. By doing so the Jews can learn how to be kind to their fellow men, their servants on the Sabbath Day.

6) Then what should we do on the Sabbath Day?
a) In the Old Testament period, Sabbath was on weekly basis, monthly basis (new moon), annual basis (festivals), and once-in-- 7 years basis (Sabbatical year, its ultimate is Jubilee). Thus, those types with their respective ceremonial activities are gone after the coming of Messiah their substance (antitype). But the spirit and morality of the Sabbath remains in the New Testament period. The types that signify the things must cease after the things signified have come. Yet God would not permit types and shadows of certain things to remain in force after the things signified become real and its original benefits become fulfilled in the coming of the Messiah. And the observance of the seventh day as the Sabbath was given to Israel through Mosaic Law as a part of ceremonial commandments that were only types and shadows of things to come in the Messianic age.

b) The things signified by the Sabbath, such as ceasing from sin, and resting in God must stay forever with the Christians. Originally, the remembrance and celebration of the completed creation must be meditated on, and observed among all human beings on the seventh day. But when the same God specifies it in Mosaic Law with types and shadows of the things to come, then it also can be changed by the same God Himself. Therefore, upon the coming of the Messiah, the observance of the seventh day can be changed by the Messiah Himself. So, meditating on the works of God and magnifying His power and goodness can be done on any days as well as on the seventh day.

c) The observance of the first day of the week by the Christians is different from that of the seventh day by the Jews. (i) As a part of the Mosaic ceremonial law, the Jews cannot change the Sabbath command. But the Christians should not worship God on the seventh day as the Jewish and Mosaic ceremony that was already fulfilled in Jesus and abolished after His resurrection and ascension. Thus, the Christian’s Sabbath observance is not following the Jewish way of distinction among the weekly, monthly, annual, and the seventh year Sabbath. The Christians have a liberty in Jesus as to when to worship and do a church’s ministry. (ii) Both the pre-Fall and the Jewish Mosaic Sabbaths as types of the Old Testament period were fulfilled by the Messiah. Thus, in the New Testament Christian church, without any trace of the Jewish ceremonial tenet its ministry must carry out the command of Jesus in terms of proclamation of the gospel of the kingdom of God, works of mercy, neighbor love, public worship of God, and sacraments on the Christian Sabbath day. (Acts 20:7) It was instituted and changed to the first day of the week for the church’s gathering through the mediation of the Apostolic Christian church while most apostles of Jesus were alive (1 Corinthians 16:2) Thus, it is called, the Lord’s Day (the Day of the Lord, Revelation 1:10)

d) In summary, the ultimate ends and means of the Sabbath observance are as follow:
i) The public worship of God as a gathering church of Jesus Christ.
ii) The preservation of the holy sacraments instituted by the Lord Jesus.
iii) The reminder of the spiritual and eternal rest in God and His kingdom.
iv) The reminder of God’s creation in six days, and of meditation of His works.
v) For the works of mercy, liberal hospitality, and kindness performed towards our neighbors.
vi) A bodily and mental rest for the Christians from all works done during six days.
vii) Edification and encouragement for each other among the Christians by their gathering.
viii) The mark of church’s existence is to be made public in the unbelieving world.
