KINGDOM OF YAHWEH AND HIS COVENANT CHILDREN – 008

PART 1: GENESIS 1-11

Genesis Chapter 4

4. Severity and Mercy of the Covenant God

4.1. The Worship of YAHWEH was at the Center of Adam’s Family.
4.1.1. YAHWEH gave Adam his family. The Bible told us at least the first couple had Cain
and Abel.
4.1.2. Two sons were taught as to how to approach YAHWEH, since they were sinners.
4.1.3. As YAHWEH taught Adam how to approach Him, now Cain and Abel had to follow
what YAHWEH taught their father how to worship YAHWEH.
4.1.4. YAHWEH accepted Abel and his offering, the slain first-born lamb.
4.1.5. But YAHWEH rejected Cain and his offering, the produce of the soil.
4.1.6. YAHWEH explained why He did not accept Cain and his offering.
4.1.7. Cain did not accept YAHWEH’S words with a penitential and contrite heart.
YAHWEH’s explanation and warning as to the possible consequences of Cain’s sin was
His mercy towards erring Cain, the wrong worshiper. But Cain blamed Abel for his
rejected worship and offering.

4.2. The Worship of YAHWEH always bears its Fruits.
4.2.1. The disobedient heart of Cain was at the core of his worship. A blood sacrifice had to be
made for an acceptable worship.
4.2.2. A worshiper and his offering cannot be separated.
4.2.3. Cain’s disobedient worship bore its fruit, murder of his own brother.
4.2.4. Abel became the first martyr because he faithfully followed YAHWEH’s worship
directive. Obedience to YAHWE and His command is always very costly. Sometimes it
takes away everything including the worshiper’s very life.

Food for Thoughts:

1. A blood sacrifice was the only way for Adam to approach YAHWEH. Why was it the only way to approach YAHWEH?

2. Why do you think YAHWEH’s talk with Cain was an act of mercy?
